Part One-Introduction of Self
Students will introduce themselves and share about two personal
artifacts. The first will be an artifact that illustrates a Habit of Heart and
Mind. The second will be a personal artifact that students feels represents
themselves. It would be helpful if
you discuss and help the child be selective in the selection of his/her
artifacts.
Habit of Heart and Mind Artifact-
Students will chose an artifact that demonstrates one of the Habits of Heart and Mind.
Certain habits are more age appropriate. Perseverance for a time
they worked hard and didn’t give up. Exploration a time they tried something
new or studied and researched a new idea. Collaboration
a time there they worked with a team or siblings.
Personal/Something Special Artifact-
Students will chose an artifact that they think best describes or
represents them. This can be anything they find to be important from a picture
of a pet to a treasured item.
Part Two-Presentation of Learning
Favorite books, timelines, Writer’s Workshop journals, or a page
of math will be chosen by students to share. For the most part this will be done
in class. If a piece of work completed at home is important enough to your child
to be included in their POL, please send those artifacts to school.
An Easy Format
At exhibition students were prompted using the same question at
each expert group. The students presented so beautifully in part because these
question made their sharing predictable and patterned. To build on their
success POL’s will follow a similar format. They will present each artifact by
answering the same three questions:
What is it?
Why is it important?
What does it say about me?
Practicing at home is important for your child. At any free
moment select on artifact and review these three questions. You can do it right
before bed, on the way home from school.
